Spotlight back on pharmaceuticals, IT stocks as rupee falters

MUMBAI: Investors have turned to defensive stocks such as technology and pharmaceuticals from cyclical and financial services as geopolitical tension in Iraq and a poor monsoon loom over India, threatening to undermine Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to revive economic growth and curb inflation.

The fortunes of exporters such as technology and pharmaceutical companies are directly linked to currency movements. The rupee has depreciated 2.8% in the last one month from 58.50 levels to 60.10 levels, bumping up the value of export-related stocks.

Nifty likely to open flat; rate sensitives will be in focus

MUMBAI: The Nifty is likely to open on a flat note in absence of supportive cues from Asian peers. The trade is likely to turn choppy as the session progresses and rate sensitives will be in action ahead of RBI policy for direction.

According to ET poll, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan is expected to keep rates unchanged when he announces monetary policy on Tuesday. The outlook will be more dependent on what Finance Minister Arun Jiatley plans to do and the vagaries of the weather.
The Finance Ministry has pitched for keeping up the pressure on fiscal consolidation even as some leading economists have urged the government to adopt a longer time frame to improve its finances as a way of giving a push to the struggling economy that has slumped to decadal lows.

Meanwhile, India's GDP for the fourth quarter of the financial year 2013-2014 grew at 4.6 per cent versus an ET Now Poll estimate of 4.7 per cent. The GDP for the entire FY14 grew at 4.7 per cent. This marks a second straight year of sub-5 percent growth - the worst slowdown in more than a quarter of a century.
