Gold falls to near 4-month low; posts sharp weekly drop

NEW YORK/LONDON: Gold fell almost 1 per cent to a near four-month low on Friday, extending its losing streak a fourth consecutive day, weighed down by book squaring ahead of month end and selling by commodity funds.

For the week, gold lost about 3.5 per cent for its worst decline since late November 2013. Heavy technical selling throughout the week sent bullion prices below $1,250 for the first time since Feb. 4.

"It's the end-of-the-month position clearing," said COMEX gold options floor trader Jonathan Jossen.

Some hedge funds are forced to sell commodities to raise cash to pay for losses in their bearish bets against the rallying US government bond prices, Jossen added.

Analysts noted a breakdown of gold's usual inverse correlation with US bond yields. Yields on 10-year US Treasuries fell sharply this week to hit their lowest in 11 months.

Spot gold was down 0.7 per cent at $1,247.10 an ounce by 3:22 p.m. EDT (1922 GMT), having earlier hit a low of $1,241.99, its lowest since early February.

US gold futures for August delivery settled down $11.10 an ounce at $1,246.

Asian shares firm on Wall St record

TOKYO: Japanese shares rose in a steady start for Asian equities on Monday thanks to a strong session on Wall Street, and as a decisive win for Ukrainian billionaire Petro Poroshenko in the nation's presidential election ensured a tense runoff round won't be required.

Tokyo's Nikkei average climbed 0.7 per cent while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan stood almost flat, just shy of one-year highs hit on Friday.

Activity could be crimped in Asia due to market holidays in London and New York on Monday.

Investors took their cue from upbeat US hosing data on Friday, with sales of new US single-family homes rising more than expected in April and the number of houses on the market hitting a 3-1/2 year-high.

The figures were good enough to boost Wall Street shares after Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen said earlier this month that a slumping housing market, as well as geopolitical tensions, risk undermining the US economy

The S&P 500 index closed at a record high of 1900.53 on Friday, just below a record intraday high of 1,902.17 set on May 13, buoyed by a rally in housing stocks.

S&P 500 closes at record high on housing sales, HP shares

The S&P 500 closed at a record high on Friday, buoyed by a rally in housing stocks after better-than-expected home sales and a jump in Hewlett-Packard shares a day after the personal computer maker said it would cut more jobs. The S&P 500 ended above 1,900, just below a record intraday high of 1,902.17 set on May 13 and above its record closing high of 1,897.45 the same day. Eight of the 10 S&P sector indexes ended higher for the day. The Dow Jones Transportation Average rose 0.8 percent to close at a record high, after hitting a lifetime intraday high of 7,995.39. Housing stocks ranked among the market's biggest outperformers, with the housing index up 1.9 percent. Big tech names like Apple Inc and Amazon lifted the Nasdaq and helped it outperform the broader market. Apple shares ended up 1.1 percent at USD 614.13. Amazon shares jumped 2.4 percent to USD 312.24. Hewlett-Packard jumped 6.1 percent to USD 33.72. The stock was among the S&P 500's best performers a day after the personal computer maker said it may cut as many as 16,000 more jobs in a major ramp-up of CEO Meg Whitman's years-long effort to turn the company around and relieve pressure on its profit margins. The CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, fell 5.6 percent to end at 11.36, its lowest level since March 2013. Known as Wall Street's fear index, the VIX is extremely low by historical standards. The VIX, at those levels, shows investors' lack of anxiety and "a certain amount of complacency," said Donald Selkin, chief market strategist at National Securities in New York. "The lower the VIX, the more overbought the market gets, leaving it vulnerable to some kind of setback," Selkin said. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 63.19 points or 0.38 percent, to 16,606.27. The S&P 500 gained 8.04 points or 0.42 percent, to end at 1,900.53, a record. The Nasdaq Composite added 31.47 points or 0.76 percent, to 4,185.81. The S&P 500 posted its fifth daily advance out of the past six sessions, and its first weekly gain out of the past three. For the week, the Dow rose 0.7 percent, the S&P 500 jumped 1.2 percent and the Nasdaq gained 2.3 percent. A total of 146 stocks on the Big Board and Nasdaq touched 52-week highs, while just 26 issues hit 52-week lows. Two of the issues hitting 52-week lows on the Nasdaq are exchange-traded securities that track volatility.

Sensex, Nifty open flat; HDFC gains, TCS & SBI early losers

It was a soft opening on Dalal Street. The Sensex is up 32.70 points at 22376.74, and the Nifty is down 5.70 points at 6654.15. About 268 shares have advanced, 115 shares declined, and 22 shares are unchanged. HDFC, BHEL, Tata Power, ONGC and Tata Motors are gainers in the Sensex. Among the losers are Dr Reddy's Labs, TCS, Tata Steel, Cipla and SBI. The Indian rupee opened flat at 60.06 per dollar versus 60.06 Thursday. The euro rose against the dollar trading not far from recent two-month highs and buoyed by a rise in overnight money market rates driven by dwindling excess cash in the euro zone. The currency has gained over 4 percent in the past six months. Pramit Brahmbhatt of Veracity India said that, "Rupee is expected to trade weak today as overnight US equities traded weak. Uncertainty over election outcome and dollar demand from oil importers will help dollar trade strong. The range for the day is seen between 59.70-60.50/dollar." In the US, stocks mostly declined, with the S&P 500 retreating after rising to within two points of its record close and the Nasdaq composite extending losses into a third day, as investors sorted through a mixed bag of earnings. In commodities, Nymex crude fell driven by a drop in commercial crude stocks that topped out at a key technical level, while Brent fell as the market awaited developments in the Ukraine conflict. From precious metals space, gold slipped further extending its declines, after ECB president Mario Draghi's comments that the bank may act to stem falling inflation at its June meeting knocked the euro.

Nifty to open in green aided by positive global cues

The Indian equity market is likely to open in the green a day after it saw deep cuts due to profit booking and weak global cues. The SGX Nifty, an indicator of the market opening, was trading at 6704, up 32.50 points at 7:40. Global cues too are likely to support Nifty in its recovery. US markets ended mostly higher after Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled a willingness to talk on the Ukraine crisis. European markets closed mixed and Asian shares are rebounding in morning trade ahead of China trade data due today. In other asset classes, the dollar index is hovering around 79.20 levels against the euro trading steady near 1.39. Nymex crude oil prices rose after a government report showed an unexpected sharp drop in inventories in the US. Brent Crude too gained.

Dollar holds steady amid Ukraine tensions

SINGAPORE: The US dollar held steady in quiet Asian trade Tuesday, holding on to advances against the yen enjoyed in New York, but investors are tracking events in Ukraine as diplomats try to avert a civil war in the country.

The dollar fetched 102.13 yen in Singapore morning trade compared with 102.14 yen in New York late Monday. The euro bought $1.3876 against $1.3874.

Analysts said trading was subdued with financial markets in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong closed for public holidays.

The greenback edged up in US trade, helped by data showing activity in the US services sector, which accounts for the bulk of economic activity, rose more than expected in April.

And Max Ho, new business consultant at CMC Markets in Singapore, said the unit was retaining support due to its safe-haven status in the face of "the looming threat of full-scale intervention in Ukraine by Russia".
